Liverpool still interested in former Manchester United defender
Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross has been linked with a number of clubs in recent days, however it looks as though Liverpool remain the only club with a genuine interest.
Shawcross, 21, is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and Rafa Benitez knows he needs to fill the void left by Sami Hyypia’s departure last season, so it would certainly make sense for Liverpool to make a move.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis is obviously desperate to hold onto one of his most prized assets and he has today had this to say : “We want to keep Ryan among the younger players in the squad. He will be a big asset to us as this club looks to push on.”
Shawcross moved to the Britannia stadium back in 2007 on an initial one-year loan deal, however Stoke soon made that loan deal permanent. Shawcross cost Stoke just £2 million, however that £2 million would likely be quadrupled if any move to Liverpool was to happen.
I personally think Shawcross would a superb signing for Rafa Benitez. I have no doubt that over the next few years, Shawcross will become a regular in the England set-up and I certainly wouldn’t be backing against him making England’s squad for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
What do you think? Would Shawcross be a good signing for Liverpool? Comments below please.
